HEALTHY STUDENTS LEARN BETTER!

Tiverton is a member of the Rhode Island Healthy Schools Coalition.  In general, the goals of the coalition are to provide increased opportunities to engage in physical activity and to promote healthier foods and beverages at school and school events.

There is a definite relationship between good nutrition and academic performance.  Healthy students who exercise regularly are known to have fewer absences from school. Life-long learning reinforced in the school environment will reduce our students’ chances for development of many chronic diseases when they grow up.  Our hope is that our students will develop the knowledge, attitudes, skills, behaviors and confidence needed to have a lifelong healthy lifestyle

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  It is crucial that your child eat a healthy breakfast.  Breakfast is also offered here at Pocasset before school begins. The morning snack is another very important meal during your child’s day.  The snack should be nutritious and accompanied by low fat milk, water or 100% fruit or vegetable juice.

The following is a list of recommended healthy foods:

fresh fruit
trail mix (dried fruit and nuts)
bread sticks,  string cheese
raisons
multigrain cereal
pretzels
baked chips
low fat pudding,  low fat or non-fat yogurt
peanut butter and low fat crackers
 vegetables- celery, carrots, broccoli, beans
half bagel with peanut butter, cheese, or slice of meat
low fat graham crackers

Many of the “breakfast/granola bars” and yogurts are actually very high in fats and sugars.  It is important to read food labels.  Cookies, chips and fruit candy or rollups and sugar drinks should not be sent for school snack.

As a parent you can set a good example for your child by eating a balanced diet high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  Children love to be involved in selecting and preparing food.

I am looking forward to a safe, happy and healthy year at Fort Barton School.  Please feel free to call me at any time with questions or concerns.
