How to Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for our schools.

Dear Tiverton Community,

The Rhode Island General Laws 16-2-18.4 requires all school volunteers to pass and submit a state criminal background check for each school year, prior to volunteering in any public school. If you are interested in volunteering for the Tiverton Public Schools (i.e. chaperoning field trips, table hosting, reading to a class), you must provide the results of an annual criminal background check investigation (BCI) within one year prior to the date of volunteering.  Below, please find information on how to obtain an accepted BCI for the upcoming school year:

The Tiverton Police Headquarters will conduct BCIs at 20 Industrial Way, Tiverton RI on Tuesdays between the hours of 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM with a valid form of identification. The cost to conduct a BCI can be paid with cash, check or money order in the amount of $5.00 and is to be paid by the volunteer. If paying by check, please make checks out to “Tiverton Police Department”. To save time, fill out and print the BCI request form prior to your arrival. You can access the form HERE.

Examples of acceptable identification include:

  • Valid state issued driver’s license
  • Valid state issued identification card
  • Valid United States passport

For additional information regarding national background checks, please contact Mrs. Katherine Vieira, 401-816-4430, cvieira@tivertonpoliceri.com.

The sealed document from the police department will be sent to you up to a week after you request the background check and will include the findings of the background check. If the background check returns with disqualifying information, the disqualifying information will be included. For a list of offenses that are considered “disqualifying information,” please see Rhode Island General Laws Sections 23-17-37, 11-37,8.1, and 11-37-8.3.

Alternatively, the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office offers in-person background checks at 4 Howard Avenue in Cranston (located in the Pastore Center). Upon arrival, register online to reserve your place in the virtual line by using the website or QR code provided on signage in the parking lot. You will first receive a welcome text. Please wait for a second text message stating that you should enter the facility. Registration is from 8:30 AM to 4:15 PM, The only payment methods accepted are credit and debit (fees apply). This is a walk-in service only; no appointments are accepted. Individuals without access to the internet should call 401-274-4400 and select option 2.

Volunteers are encouraged to obtain a BCI check at least one week prior to a planned event as it could take up to a week to receive the document. Volunteers only need one current background check on file to volunteer in any of the Tiverton schools. A database of approved volunteers is available to every school should you have children in more than one Tiverton school, the principal can confirm your status using the district database.  Please give the original form to a principal who will forward it to the Central Administration office personnel for recording.

Thank you for your unwavering support through volunteerism and we appreciate your understanding in our efforts to keep our students safe.

Sincerely,

Peter
